I'll never forget the first time my husband and I opened our financial lives to someone we hardly knew.  We were meeting with a life insurance agent.  It was right after we bought our first house.  

At the time, my regular nine to five was in advertising.  I knew only too well how it is when someone is trying to sell you something.   By being ignorant about life insurance, he had an uphill battle as he pitched his solution.  That experience is one of the reasons I became a fiduciary. 
I realized that if you only represent one company, you’re encouraged to make those products fit everyone.  You know what they say:  "If your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail."
